Subconsciously Competent - adj Experienced, well intentioned, and doing the job so long and well that that they carry out key elements without thought and so forget to include them in the guidance and training they provide to newcomers.
ON-BOARDING RESOURCES
No matter what the job, you have people that do it well and have done it long, what most call "Experienced". If you are like the majority of organizations these are the team members you look for to train your new hires. They may also be your biggest mistake. Good at the job does not automatically mean good at teaching the job.
Every organization needs to have a formal curriculum for on-boarding new hires. It should include the specific job skills (vetted by multiple skilled folks to avoid the issues of the subconsciously competent) as well as the basic geography of the workplace, mission of the company and mission of the unit where they will be working. It should include information and examples of the organizational culture, policies and procedures for reporting problems, and yes, successes. Information about preferred communication styles, resources for further learning, and future opportunities for the organization and for the individual to name just
We can work with your folks to develop on-boarding tools from simple checklists to full blown curriculum with training for your trainers. We can even do the training for you (to be honest we recommend you prepare your folks to do it). Some have found it helpful for one of our trainers to co-train with your people the first time or two that they use the curriculum. When we build full curriculum we do strongly recommend our Training for Trainers unit be included as part of the project.
Again, it is your organization, we can do as much or as little as you need. We are all about solutions, not ego. Contact us and we will be happy to meet with you to talk about your needs, no charge!
